Ultimate Island Links
No tour of Scotland is complete without a dram of whisky and a few rounds of classic links golf on the rugged western coast. From the Kintyre Peninsula to the Inner Hebrides, this itinerary takes you off the beaten track to courses and landscapes most golfers never see.
It begins in Machrihanish — the remote golfing hamlet at the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, where the first hole of the age-old Machrihanish Golf Club is widely recognised as the best opening hole in world golf. Then a ferry across to Islay, Scotland's whisky island, to play the historic Machrie Links (established 1891) and sample single-malt at distilleries like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg.
This is golf at its most elemental — wild dunes, Atlantic wind, peat-smoked whisky, and the kind of silence you forgot existed. A bucket-list trip for the adventurous golfer.

Day by Day
A suggested flow for your trip. Every day is flexible — extend, shorten, or swap any element based on your preferences.
Touchdown on the Kintyre Coast
Short Logan Air flight from Glasgow to Campbeltown (40 minutes). Transfer to The Ugadale Hotel & Cottages in Machrihanish — right beside the first tee. Settle in with views of the Atlantic and the Hebridean islands. Evening walk along Machrihanish beach and dinner at the Old Clubhouse Pub.
Nature's Own Links
Machrihanish Dunes is unique — it was built with a "minimum disturbance" philosophy, meaning the natural dunes were barely touched. The result is raw, authentic links golf through towering sand formations along the Atlantic shore. No two holes feel alike. Afternoon free to walk the coast or visit Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown.
The Best Opening Hole in Golf
The main event on the Kintyre Peninsula. Machrihanish Golf Club's 1st hole — a blind drive across the Atlantic beach — is widely regarded as the greatest opening hole in world golf. The course beyond is a classic Old Tom Morris / James Braid links through dunes and sheep-grazed turf. A pilgrimage round.
Crossing to Scotland's Whisky Island
Morning ferry from Kennacraig to Islay (approx. 2 hours through the Sound of Jura — stunning scenery). Transfer to The Machrie Hotel, set in the dunes beside seven miles of pristine beach. Afternoon whisky distillery tour — choose from Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, or Bowmore. Evening dinner at the hotel.
Historic Islay Links
The Machrie Links — established in 1891 and reimagined in 2018 — is a course of towering blind shots, natural dune amphitheatres, and the kind of isolation that makes you forget the rest of the world exists. Afternoon free for a second distillery visit or a walk along Machrie Bay.
Whisky, Wildlife & Wild Coast
A full day to explore Islay at your own pace. Visit a second (or third) distillery, spot golden eagles along the coast, cycle to Port Ellen lighthouse, or simply sit on seven miles of empty beach. This is Scotland at its most peaceful. Farewell dinner at The Machrie.
Back to the Mainland
Full breakfast, then Logan Air flight from Islay to Glasgow (35 minutes). Or extend with an add-on trip to Gleneagles, St Andrews, or Edinburgh — we'll build it for you.
