Introducing Portugal

Europe's Best-Value Luxury Golf

Portugal has a strong claim to be the most under-priced luxury golf destination in Europe. The courses have the design pedigree you'd expect in Scotland or the Costa del Sol — several rank in the World Top 100 — but green fees, hotels, and long wine-soaked dinners all cost meaningfully less than in neighbouring Spain. It's a country of ancient walled towns, friendly people, and 360 days of sunshine a year on the southern coast.

The gravitational centre of Portuguese golf is the Algarve, the country's southern coastline — home to the famous Golden Triangle of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and San Lorenzo, plus the Dom Pedro complex at Vilamoura that has hosted the Portugal Masters for nearly two decades. But limiting yourself to the Algarve means missing out.

Just north of Lisbon, the Silver Coast has quietly become one of Europe's most exciting golf destinations thanks to West Cliffs, Praia D'El Rey, and Royal Óbidos — three Atlantic-facing links designed in the last two decades. In the Sintra hills, Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa sit under a UNESCO palace skyline. And in the north, Porto offers world-class port cellars, the ancient Douro Valley wine route, and a handful of coastal links for golfers who want to escape the Algarve crowds.

Four Distinct Regions

Each Portuguese golf region has its own character, courses, and cultural treasures. Explore them below.

Lisbon & Cascais — City Meets Sintra Hills

Lisbon is one of Europe's most captivating cities — seven hills, cobbled alleyways, saudade-soaked fado clubs, and the unexpected feeling of a capital that still runs on neighbourhood rhythm. Thirty minutes west, the coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril put you within a short drive of Oitavos Dunes (a perennial European top-50) and the Ritz-Carlton Penha Longa's Atlantic Course, set against the UNESCO-listed Sintra palaces.

Off the course: tram 28E through Alfama, the Jerónimos Monastery and pastéis de Belém, the cliff-top fortresses of Sintra, and dinner in the Bairro Alto. A perfect three- or four-day base before heading south to the Algarve or north to the Silver Coast.

Top Attractions

  • Alfama & Tram 28E
  • Sintra UNESCO Heritage Site
  • Pena Palace
  • Tower of Belém
  • Jerónimos Monastery
  • Castelo de São Jorge
  • Cabo da Roca (mainland Europe's westernmost point)
  • Pastéis de Belém

Silver Coast — Europe's Quiet Upstart

Less than an hour north of Lisbon, the Silver Coast has become one of the most talked-about new golf regions in Europe. West Cliffs (Cynthia Dye's cliff-top links), Praia D'El Rey (RTJ Jr., Atlantic-facing), and the Seve Ballesteros-designed Royal Óbidos cluster within twenty minutes of each other, all on the fortified coastline around the medieval walled town of Óbidos.

It's quieter than the Algarve, the green fees are gentler, and the scenery — cliffs, lagoons, the surf breaks of Peniche — is arguably more dramatic. Pair it with a few days in Lisbon, or string together with the Algarve to the south for a 10-14 night trip.

Top Attractions

  • Óbidos Walled Town
  • Nazaré (famous big-wave surfing)
  • Alcobaça Monastery
  • Batalha Monastery
  • Berlengas Islands
  • Peniche & Baleal beaches
  • Fátima Shrine
  • Tomar Knights Templar Castle

Algarve — Europe's Original Golf Coast

The Algarve has been Europe's golfing sun-belt since the 1970s, and it's still the country's gravitational centre for visiting golfers. The famous Golden Triangle around Almancil packs Quinta do Lago (North & South), San Lorenzo, and Vale do Lobo (Royal & Ocean) within a few minutes of each other. Further west, Vilamoura's Dom Pedro complex offers five courses including the Portugal Masters host Victoria. And the Jack Nicklaus-designed Monte Rei, over near the Spanish border, is regularly ranked Portugal's #1.

Between rounds: clifftop lookouts over the Benagil sea caves, the fishing village of Ferragudo, long seafood lunches, and 360 days of sunshine that make this coast playable year-round.

Top Attractions

  • Benagil Caves
  • Cabo de São Vicente (Europe's SW tip)
  • Lagos Old Town
  • Tavira Fishing Village
  • Ria Formosa Natural Park
  • Ferragudo & Carvoeiro
  • Silves Moorish Castle
  • The Algarve Beaches

Porto & the Douro Valley — Port, Fado & the Coast

Portugal's second city is a UNESCO-listed river town of azulejo-tiled metros, crumbling palaces, and port cellars lining the Douro's south bank in Vila Nova de Gaia. It's a smaller, gentler counterpoint to Lisbon — and just twenty minutes from Estela, a coastal links that's long been a favourite of Porto locals.

Pair Porto with a cruise through the terraced Douro Valley wine country, tastings at centuries-old port houses (Taylor's, Sandeman, Graham's), and dinners of francesinha sandwiches at places only locals know. A great three-night add-on to a Silver Coast or Lisbon trip — or the start of a longer north-to-south Portugal itinerary.

Top Attractions

  • Port Wine Cellar Tastings
  • Douro Valley Vineyards
  • Dom Luís I Bridge
  • Livraria Lello
  • Ribeira District
  • Igreja de São Francisco
  • Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, Braga
  • Guimarães (birthplace of Portugal)
Where to Stay

Featured Accommodations

From palace hotels in Sintra to golf-resort villas on the Algarve's fairways — Portugal delivers luxury at a fraction of the cost of its neighbours.

When to Go

Best Time to Play Portugal

Peak Season: March – June, September – November

The sweet spot: temperatures 65-80°F, mild Atlantic breezes, and courses in peak condition. Tee sheets at Quinta do Lago and Monte Rei fill 6-9 months out during these months.

Year-Round Playable: Algarve

The Algarve claims 360 days of playable weather a year — and it isn't exaggeration. Winters sit at 60-68°F, the courses are quiet, and you'll find your best off-peak rates from late November through February.

Regional Differences

The Silver Coast and Lisbon get more Atlantic weather than the Algarve — pack a windshell even in summer. Porto and the north are cooler and wetter, best May through October. The Algarve south coast is the sunniest.

What to Pack

A light windshell for coastal courses year-round. In summer, short-sleeved polos and light trousers; in winter, layers for morning tee times. Waterproof shoes are useful on the Silver Coast November through March.
