Royal Dornoch Golf Club

Royal Dornoch is the most remotely located of the world's top-ranked golf courses — a four-hour drive from Edinburgh along the spine of the Highlands — and most golfers who make the pilgrimage say it is the finest links they have ever played. Tom Watson called it 'the most fun I have ever had on a golf course.' The course sits on a raised beach above Dornoch Firth, delivering elevated tee shots, natural green plateaux, and a purity of design that more accessible courses can only aspire to.

First laid out in 1616, the course was shaped into its modern form by Old Tom Morris in 1877 and refined by John Sutherland in the early 20th century. It has never hosted The Open Championship — its remote location makes the logistics impossible — but many professionals and architects consider it the standard against which all other links are measured.
